The General Union of Palestinian Students in the United Kingdom announced on Tuesday, January 24, that they have reinstated their membership in the National Union of Students in Britain, five years after their membership was suspended as the result of external pressure from pro-Zionist movements.
Since that time, the National Union of Students has come out in favour of divestment from companies involved in Israeli occupation, part of the Palestinian call for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions against Israel.
GUPS’ return to full membership comes after a series of meetings between GUPS executives Fouad Shaath, Khalid al-Tamimi and Hazem Muheisen with National Union of Students executive Jim Dickinson, with the result of GUPS being granted full membership status as a student union in NUS.
The National Union of Students is the national voice of students in Britain, and holds an annual national student conference which is attended by thousands of students interested in political issues, representing different political parties and national movements.
GUPS said that this victory must be cemented by working more intensively to expose the Israeli occupation and its abuses of Palestinian human rights, and to build more student solidarity with Palestine at a national level, growing from the many student groups, protests and occupations in support of Palestine at British universities.
