A large crowd came out in Nusseirat in Gaza on January 20, 2012 in bitingly cold weather to honor the fourth anniversary of the passing of al-Hakim, Dr. George Habash, the founder of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and the Arab Nationalist Movement.
The event included a film showcasing the biography of al-Hakim throughout his long life of struggle, launching this evening’s event and a series of events that will be organized by the PFLP commemorating the life and legacy of Al-Hakim.
Comrade Samer Abu Shawish, a member of the Front in Nuseirat, spoke on behalf of the PFLP, saying that “Four years ago, Al-Hakim, George Habash, departed, leaving behind his eternal words and legacy – to uphold unity and resistance as a national strategy for liberation, self-determination, and the unity of our people. He left this legacy through the mother organization – the Arab Nationalist Movement – and her child, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine – to fulfill the national and international principles and objectives for which he struggled. Revolutionaries do not die – their memory is immortal and they live forever within us.”
He recounted the life not only of Dr. Habash, but of the party he founded – its prominent and ongoing role in the struggle against Zionist occupation and world imperialism, and its foundations, approach, and thought, formulated by heroes and freedom fighters like Dr. Habash, Wadie Haddad, Abu Ali Mustafa and Ghassan Kanafani, and the continuing leadership of general secretary Ahmad Sa’adat and the many struggling leaders and cadres of the Front.
He saluted the military resistance of the PFLP, particularly the bold action against the racist occupation minister Zeevi in retaliation for the assassination of Abu Ali Mustafa, and noted that Al-Hakim – and the party he founded – always adhered to a firm principle of the purity of weapons, never contaminating their guns of resistance with the blood of our people. He also noted that Al-Hakim’s guiding principle and goal – which continues to guide the Front – is the liberation of the entire land of Palestine in full sovereignty and freedom.
He concluded by paying tribute to the many martyrs of the PFLP and the Palestinian cause who fought with honor and sincere commitment as part of our national democratic liberation movement and our struggle for a unified socialist Arab society free of injustice, exploitation and corruption across the entire Arab homeland. He promised that, on the fourth anniversary of his death, Al-Hakim’s goals and principles remain very much alive, and will continue to be so until they are achieved in full.
