A youth summer camp in honour of the leader Comrade Mahmoud Gharbawi, who passed away 40 days ago, was opened on Wednesday, July 11, 2012 by the Vanguards of Ghassan Kanafani (an organization for school-age children and youth) in Bureij, in Gaza’s central governorate. Over 100 boys and girls will participate in the camp.

The camp’s opening also coincided with the 40th anniversary of the assassination of Comrade Ghassan Kanafani, the Palestinian writer and PFLP leader, for which the youth organization is named. Comrade Mahmoud Gharbawi was a lifelong Palestinian leader and activist who served on the Political Bureau of the PFLP and spent many years in the prisons of the occupation, as well as being a writer and artist himself, whose work expressed the Palestinian cause.

Comrade Emad Abu Rahma, member of the Central Committee of the PFLP, spoke on behalf of the Front at the opening of the camp, saying that the youth of today are the leaders of the future, who can take it upon themselves to complete the revolution that was begun by previous generations and continue the national struggle to achieve self-determination, freedom, return and liberation.

He noted that the life and struggle of the leader Mahmoud Gharbawi holds many lessons, that he was a role model and an example to follow, who dedicated his life to the Palestinian cause, and was an extraordinarily giving and humble person, committed to struggle, and also to writing and art. Comrade Abu Rahma said that Mahmoud Gharbawi left behind a great legacy of study and action, inside and outside the prisons of the occupation.

Also marking the 40th anniversary of his death, a delegation of PFLP leaders visited Comrade Gharbawi’s grave, laying a wreath of flowers, accompanied by many experienced strugglers, friends of Mahmoud Gharbawi, and youth members of the Vanguards of Ghassan Kanafani. The delegation noted his lifelong commitment to the national cause, and to the struggles of Palestinian refugees to return, himself a refugee living his life in Bureij refugee camp, and pledged to remain true to the path that he had lain out in his life.
