Campaigners for Palestine in New York City protested on Monday, October 2 calling for the freedom of the imprisoned General Secretary of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, Comrade Ahmad Sa’adat. Activists with the Samidoun Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network carried signs and chanted demanding freedom for Sa’adat and his fellow Palestinian political prisoners in Zionist jails.
The protest came as part of a weekly series of demonstrations focusing on the struggle of Palestinian prisoners for freedom, in solidarity with the Palestinian liberation movement. Protesters gathered outside of an electronics store in New Yor City’s Union Square to distribute materials about the case of Comrade Sa’adat, the struggle of the Palestinian prisoners and the role of global corporations like Hewlett-Packard in profiting from the colonization of Palestine.
The demonstrators carried signs with slogans like “Free Ahmad Sa’adat and all Palestinian prisoners,” “Zionism is Racism,” “Support Palestinian Resistance,” and “Free All Political Prisoners.” The protesters also expressed their solidarity with Black Liberation political prisoners in U.S. jails, demanding freedom for Herman Bell, Jalil Muntaqim and Robert Seth Hayes.
They distributed leaflets and information to passers-by about the case of Comrade Sa’adat, the struggle of Palestinian prisoners and the growing boycott campaign against HP, which profits from developing the apartheid checkpoint system, creating databases for the Zionist prison system and providing technical services to the Zionist occupation military.
The protesters received a statement from Comrade Khaled Barakat, the international spokesperson of the Campaign to Free Ahmad Sa’adat, who saluted the organizers for their consistent and principled solidarity with Comrade Sa’adat and his fellow imprisoned strugglers for liberation over years of demonstrations. “Your actions and dedication are seen not only here but also warm the hearts and raise the spirits of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails,” said Barakat.
“Comrade Ahmad Sa’adat, the imprisoned General Secretary of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, is a Palestinian political leader whose dedication and commitment to the Palestinian people, their land and their liberation is extraordinary. For that reason, and alongside 6,000 other Palestinians – leaders of the struggle for return and liberation – he was imprisoned first by the Palestinian Authority, held under U.S. and British guard, seized in a violent attack that demolished Jericho prison, and now is serving a 30-year sentence in Israeli occupation prisons,” wrote Comrade Barakat.
