Zionist officials and organizations responded with anger and attempts to suppress public events and activities in Belgium and Spain following the highly successful appearances of Comrade Leila Khaled, member of the Political Bureau of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, at the European Parliament in Brussels and the Fiesta of the Spanish Communist Party in Madrid.
Yair Lapid, leader of the Yesh Atid party, demanded that the Spanish foreign Ministry stop Comrade Khaled’s event in Madrid in an official letter; nonetheless, her events went forward as planned with large and enthusiastic participation from students, activists and organizers for justice in Madrid.
Zionist organizations began a media and political campaign to attempt to stop Comrade Khaled’s appearance in an event in the European Parliament on the struggle of Palestinian women, alongside popular resistance activist Ahed Tamimi and lawyer Sahar Francis, executive director of Addameer Prisoner Support and Human Rights Association.
The conference was packed with supporters who gave a warm standing ovation to Comrade Leila and her fellow speakers on Palestinian women’s resistance. The conference was convened by Izquierda Unida members of European Parliament, Angela Vallina and Javier Couso, part of the GUE/NGL (United European Left/Nordic Green Left) bloc in the European Parliament, along with the Unadikum Association.
The event was followed by another warm reception in Madrid for Comrade Leila at the Fiesta in an event chaired by Comrade Manu Pineda, the Spanish Communist Party’s director of Middle East Affairs and a longtime organizer for justice for the Palestinian people.
Comrade Khaled Barakat noted that “the Zionist campaign and the statements of Lapid and other officials are part of an empty strategy that indicates the state of panic and confusion experienced by Zionist embassies in Europe with every visit of Leila Khaled.”
Zionist officials expressed outrage ad Comrade Khaled’s statement calling for Zionist officials to be tried for their war crimes against the Palestinian and Arab people like the Nazis were at Nuremberg.
Barakat noted that “the real motivation for these Zionist efforts is an attempt to suppress support for the Palestinian resistance in Europe, when there are growing political and legal achievements and pushback to the so-called ‘terror lists’ that aim to suppress Palestinian organizing. It is urgent for leftist parties and strugglers of the resistance forces to normalize the voices of the resistance, strengthen relationships and defend the media, public and political activities of the resistance.”
