The broadest solidarity campaign and mass movement in solidarity with imprisoned leader Khader Adnan, is needed as he enters his fifty-fifth day of hunger strike, said Comrade Nasrallah Jarghoun, a student leader with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine in Khan Younis.

Jarghoun spoke during a rally in Khan Younis outside the International Committee of the Red Cross office on Thursday, emphasizing the need to raise the level of attention on the prisoners’ cause in the Palestinian and Arab movement, saying that this cause must not be seasonal but permanent until the prisoners win their freedom, an essential part of the rights and freedom of Palestinian land and people.

The protest was widely attended by a wide variety of groups in the area, emphasizing the need to mobilize around the issue of political prisoners and prisoners of war, and to raise this issue at an international level in all international forums. He saluted the Palestinian lawyers boycotting Israeli military courts in solidarity with Khader Adnan, and called for a national vision and plan to advance the prisoners’ cause.

Jarghoun spoke about Khader Adnan’s ongoing hunger-strike, entering its fifty-fifth day. He described Adnan’s struggle as an epic battle, placing flesh and blood on the line in a battle for human dignity in the face of the occupation’s massive structures of oppression, represented by the Shin Bet and their torture, the Israel Prison Services and their abuses, and the arrogant racism that underlies their aggressive policies, attempting to break the will of the Palestinian people. Khader Adnan’s steadfastness and courage, said Jarghoun, is a brilliant example of the failure of torture and oppression to break the spirit of Palestinian resistance.

He denounced official international silence and particularly that of the Red Cross, noting that such silence is complicity as the suffering of prisoners worsens daily inside the occupation’s prisons.

Ahmed al-Mudellal of Islamic Jihad spoke about Khader Adnan, saying that his health is deteriorating daily and the occupation has full responsibility for his life and health. He called upon all Palestinian parties and institutions to expand their work in solidarity with the prisoners’ movement. He noted the strong role of the Popular Front in supporting the prisoners’ movement and calling for protests in solidarity with Sheikh Khader Adnan, and saluted the Palestinian national leaders in occupation prisons – Comrade Ahmad Sa’adat, General Secretary of the PFLP; Marwan Barghouti; Aziz Dweik; and all of Palestine’s prisoners of freedom.

Comrade Rami Abu Saud, a freed prisoner, spoke about the need to continue the popular actions and sit-ins taking place to put pressure on international institutions to focus on the prisoners’ cause. He said that Khader Adnan is a true hero and a model of steadfastness and sacrifice, as is Comrade Ahmad Sa’adat, who with his fellow isolated prisoners have firmly stood for dignity for all while engaged in “battles of the empty stomachs.”

The protest raised slogans condemning the occupation’s racist policies toward prisoners, and sent a letter to the Director of the ICRC in the province, urging action on the struggle of Palestinian prisoners and particularly Khader Adnan.

Hunger strikes and protests continued in solidarity with Khader Adnan as his hunger strike reaches into its 56th day, with protests in Haifa, Jerusalem, Ramallah, Bethlehem, Jenin and Gaza. Adnan has been on hunger strike since December 17, 2011, when he was abducted by the occupation military. He has been held under administrative detention on secret evidence without charge since that time, and was subjected to torture and abuse in interrogation. In protest, Adnan has refused to speak or eat since that time, and he has become a symbol of Palestinian prisoners’ steadfastness and resistance even as his life is in serious danger.

She also called for a full boycott of the occupation on all levels, official and public, and increased legal action to hold the occupation state and its officials accountable for their crimes.

She encouraged a Palestinian boycott of court hearings and processes of administrative detention, as they are nothing but a sham to attempt to legitimize arbitrary, secret and illegal detention, and are nothing more than an arm of the occupation. Khader Adnan has been held in administrative detention without charge since December 17 and has been on hunger strike since that time, protesting the illegal administrative detention system as well as the torture and abuse to which he and other Palestinian political prisoners are subjected in interrogation.

She saluted Adnan and his fellow Palestinian prisoners, noting that 10 prisoners in Ofer prison, including 4 comrades from the PFLP, had been placed in solitary confinement because of their solidarity hunger strike in support of Khader Adnan. Jarrar demanded the abolishment of isolation, which is a mechanism of torture and abuse, noting that it was currently being used on a long-term basis against dozens of Palestinian prisoners, including PFLP General Secretary Ahmad Sa’adat.

Jarrar called on international activists to launch protests and solidarity actions in support of Khader Adnan, drawing attention to his situation, and saluted and called for intensified national efforts to support the student protests, lawyers’ protests, and prisoners’ families’ protests in support of Adnan in Palestine.

Furthermore, the Front noted its deep concern about the news that Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, Abu Mazen, had also been appointed Prime Minister of the PA Government, in violation of the Basic Law passed by the Palestinian Legislative Council requiring the separation of these powers.

Comrade Kayed al-Ghoul, member of the Central Committee of the PFLP and leader of its branch in Gaza, said in a televised interview with Al-Jazeera that there had been, prior to this meeting, no effort or activity to implement the earlier reconciliation agreement signed in Cairo over a nearly 9 month period. He said that mechanisms had been agreed upon in December 2011, that were once again disregarded and asked whether the “blessings of Qatar” had pushed the two parties to agree on the name of Abu Mazen – already PA President – as Prime Minister in what is claimed to be a government of national consensus, despite the fact that such an action is illegal under the PA’s own laws.

Writer and political analyst Rasim Obeidat spoke to students in Jerusalem about normalization and strategies and mechanisms to confront normalization on February 2, 2012. In this regard, said Obeidat, “from the beginning of the conflict, the Palestinian people have been alert on popular and national levels to the risks of normalization, and to the ongoing attempts to impose normalization on our people, pushing acceptance of Israel as an entity naturally and rightfully based on our land, and on the ruins and tragedies of our people.”

He pointed out that popular Arab ethics and values played an important role in confronting those who were trying to sell their land to the occupier, and have continued to play a crucial role in building public awareness to confront reactionary policies that aim to import normalization into the Palestinian grassroots.

Obeidat said that “normalization” first appeared as a term and a political concept after the Camp David accords of 1979, as Israel insisted upon the establishment of normal economic, political, cultural, commercial, diplomatic and security relations between Egypt and itself before the return of occupied Arab land and the recognition and implementation of the rights of the Palestinian people (and the implementation of international resolutions). The cultural and political concept of normalization is the product of a culture of defeat and surrender institutionalized by Sadat at Camp David, said Obeidat, noting that it grew from the military and economic policy of defeat that views the US and Israel as the determining factors of any solutions. Thus, such a policy responds to the conditions and dictates of Israel and the U.S. in regards to a settlement or resolution of the Arab-Israeli conflict, and labels any solution outside the U.S./Israeli framework as “unrealistic, unreasonable and extremist.”
This acceptance of this concept was seriously politically damaging to the Arab and Palestinian cause, and sought to close off other solutions and options to reclaim our land and our rights, said Obeidat. This is the concept that drives the negotiations while utterly obscuring the roots of the struggle and the fact that the occupation’s position of power was achieved only by massive aggression against the Palestinian people and the Arab nation and suppressing our fundamental rights, he said; it seeks to undermine the moral, political and legal legitimacy of our struggle for freedom, while providing cover for the occupation and its aggression.

Normalization, said Obeidat, fundamentally seeks to release the occupation from inside the circle of regional and international isolation. There has been a significant increase in normalization activity in recent times, said Obeidat, such that it has become a “tsunami.” He noted that pre-Oslo normalization is different from post-Oslo normalization, in that the Palestinian Authority of Oslo shackled itself with numerous conditions and agreements that require them to engage in normalization at multiple levels with the occupation and establish joint ventures with it, on a security level as well as politically, culturally, academically, and institutionally.

The Authority is the “bulldozer” of normalization, said Obeidat, but the greatest danger to our culture and awareness does not come from the normalization of the Authority, but from the intellectual, cultural, political, and sporting efforts that seriously attempt to move normalization from an official program of the Palestinian Authority to a Palestinian grassroots level. This is happening particularly at universities and schools under maliciously false and deceptive banners and names promoting joint scientific, academic, educational, sporting, artistic and other projects, intended to penetrate the wall of Palestinian consciousness, distort its culture, and undermine the foundations of the Palestinian narrative. Obeidat condemned elites, who do not represent our people, from inside or outside Palestine, who attempt to test their ideas and concepts against Palestinian reality, regardless of the applicability or inapplicability of those concepts and visions, even when those concepts are inconsistent with the rights of our people and the national cause.

Obeidat called for confronting normalization at the grassroots level and preventing its expansion, saying that it was the duty of all nationally-oriented community and institutional activists to engage in campaigns to confront normalization and raise public awareness against normalization. He called upon those present to mobilize energies and efforts to expose financial and institutional relationships that drive normalization programs. At the conclusion of the event, Obeidat took questions from students. The lecture was attended by a large number of students from the Youth Parliament of Jerusalem as well as many community and student groups, including those who had been involved in causing the failure of a number of normalization meetings and conferences planned in Jerusalem.
